Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver divorced in July 2011 after Maria learned that Arnold had been having an extramarital affair for many years and fathered the child of the couples’ housekeeper. Despite extremely difficult circumstances surrounding their divorce and the media’s constant need to publicize the divorce and “dig for dirt,” both Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger have been careful about their public comments regarding each other and the divorce.
The couple has four children and they have both been focused on doing what is best for the kids. This can be particularly difficult in cases where one spouse has been unfaithful and the other spouse is deeply hurt. Arnold and Maria, however, are offering a great public example of how to behave when in the midst of a divorce. On March 5, 2011, Arnold Schwarzenegger told TMZ, "Luckily, Maria has been a terrific mother," Schwarzenegger added. "We work together even though we're going through a divorce... we make sure that the kids grow up to be really good human beings."
Maria and Arnold have gone to great lengths to keep their divorce civil in the public eye, which in the end will benefit their children. While most couples do not have to worry about making statements for the press, all couples should remember that the more civil they can be toward each other, the better off their children will be.
